MEETING WITH

Roland Giniel

Your passion in life?

“ Details—those little things that few people notice but that make all the difference. Whether they’re found in architecture, a flower, a text, or a person. For the past few years, I’ve been working in communications with the goal of showcasing a business, an activity, or a professional. My eye for detail is a strength because I know how to see beauty and quality everywhere.”

Your favorite in the south of France?

Marseille, my hometown. It’s more like a collection of villages that have become neighborhoods, with a small downtown area. It’s an immersive experience in Mediterranean cultures. You can spend a day there by taking the TGV—it’s a 25-minute ride from Avignon—and then explore on foot and by public transportation. An urban getaway like no other, in the land of Pagnol.”

3 tourist experiences in the region that you particularly like?

·        Strolling through Les Halles d’Avignon. A hub of culinary arts. The products are extraordinary; you witness little scenes of everyday life, which makes you want to cook and invite guests over.

·        The Pont du Gard—the monument is as beautiful as its surroundings. It also brings back childhood memories, from the days when we could climb up to its various levels—so narrow, so high, and with no guardrails. Crazy!

·        Go for a bike ride on Barthelasse Island. Veer off the main road and pick a path at random. You’ll ride through orchards and rediscover the school, the castle, and old levees. It’s the local Central Park!

Your advice for our guests?

Don’t try to see and do everything. If you like the region (and you will!), you’ll come back to continue the experience. The second time is even better because you have a few familiar landmarks to build on, and it’s a pleasure to revisit them.”

Music found in your travel playlist?

The song ‘Good Morning Baltimore’ from the musical Hairspray. I have a passion for American musicals, and this song instantly puts me in a good mood from the very first notes.”

Your little grain of madness?

I talk to animals—my cats and dogs, of course, but also to all the creatures that live in my garden, from birds to insects. I say hello to them, admire them, compliment them on their beauty, and thank them for visiting.”

Your favorite local dish?

Stuffed vegetables. The ones from the sun—tomatoes, zucchini, and eggplant—stuffed with meat, not rice!”

If you were a tourist attraction in the region...

The Chapel of Our Lady of Consolation on Mourgues Hill in Villeneuve. Discreet, even secluded, few people know of it. Despite its unassuming exterior, its true beauty lies within, in its frescoes.”
